NSW announces open data Budget

The NSW government will for the first time make key financial information supporting the NSW Budget available as open data.

The government has announced the electronic release of data on the NSW Budget website to allow the public to analyse economic trends without needing to enter data manually.

Online information includes budgeted financial statements for all sectors, as well as historic and macro-economic financial indicators.

State Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the government is “retiring the old legacy system and bringing the NSW Budget into the 21st century, liberating data from PDF files and making it more easily accessible”.

He said an open data Budget “means the citizens of NSW will have the ability to engage more deeply with government, so this is a win for participative democracy”.

The government has also announced plans to launch dMarketplace — a portal for accessing government data — later this year.

“Opening up government data to citizens is good for democracy and good for our economy. We’re turbocharging our commitment to open data release through the dMarketplace website which will go live later this year,” Perrottet said.

The Tasmanian government has meanwhile announced the launch of a new web portal designed to assist the Tasmanian manufacturing sector.

The Tasmanian Manufacturing Web Portal has been developed by the Tasmanian Minerals and Energy Council’s Advanced Manufacturing Committee with support from the state government.

It includes a database of companies including company names and contacts, capabilities, certifications and sector specialisations and information on Australian and international markets. So far more than 100 Tasmanian companies have signed on to be listed on the portal.
