Tasmanian emergency comms network expanded to 400 sites

Motorola Solutions has expanded the Tasmanian Government Radio Network (TasGRN) — the statewide emergency communications network — to 400 sites across the state.

The public safety radio network, which is operated in collaboration with Telstra, was first launched in mid-2023. The network is used by emergency responders and government personnel to manage incidents and emergencies. Over the past 12 months, the network has supported an average of 310,000 voice calls spanning nearly 1000 hours per month, playing a vital role in the delivery of emergency services in the state.

The network is meanwhile being expanded with broadband push-to-talk functionality to enable different response agencies to communicate on any network or device for improved collaboration, incident awareness and safety.

The expansion of the network, which commenced deployment in 2021, coincides with the Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games (AP&ES Games) held recently in Hobart, according to Tasmanian Police AP&ES Games Director Renee Oates.

“From the athletics track to the mountain bike course, the 2200 athletes that descend on Tasmania will see that our agencies are supported by a world-class emergency communications network that enables them to connect with clarity and confidence wherever they roam across our island state,” Oates said. “Thanks to TasGRN’s reliable and secure voice and data communications, Tasmania’s emergency services are better equipped to respond to complex and unpredictable events including bushfires, storms and other threats to public security.”

Motorola Solutions provides public safety communications systems across Australia including Victoria’s Metropolitan Mobile Radio Network, New South Wales’ Public Safety Network and Queensland’s Government Wireless Network.
