Qld Cyber Security Unit getting results

The Queensland government's new Cyber Security Unit has already helped avoid significant impact on government operations from cyber threats, according to Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch.

The unit, which was established in February last year within the Queensland Government Chief Information Office, has been tasked with protecting government IT systems and coordinating the response to major security incidents.

“As the recent [WannaCry] global malware attack showed, potential threats could come from anywhere in the world and we need to understand these threats as they arise,” Enoch said.

“Taking a centre-led approach in coordinating the Queensland government response to these threats lets us counter them more effectively.”

The unit has established a Queensland Government Cyber Security Steering Committee to oversee whole-of-government protections and programs, and is currently reviewing and enhancing the government’s internet gateway protection services.

It is also supporting agencies with cybersecurity awareness, education and implementation of the Australian Signals Directorate’s security recommendations.

The government has committed $12.5 million towards combating cyber threats and improving its whole-of-government security posture.

“The protection of government information is an integral part of the government’s business. These practices reflect the Palaszczuk government’s commitment to continuous improvement of our cybersecurity position,” Enoch said.
