Victoria develops cybersecurity strategy

The Victorian government has launched a new state-wide cybersecurity strategy aimed at protecting government services from cyber threats.

The new whole-of-government approach will involve initiatives including the appointment of a chief information security officer (CISO) within the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

As part of this position, the new CISO will oversee and coordinate cross-government action to tackle cyber threats.

The strategy will also involve the development of emergency governance arrangements with Emergency Management Victoria to better understand and plan for risks, as well as the development of a plan to attract and develop skilled cybersecurity public sector workers.

The state government meanwhile plans to strengthen information-sharing partnerships with the private sector and better coordinate the procurement of cybersecurity services.

Finally, the government plans to conduct quarterly cybersecurity briefings for the Victorian Secretaries Board and the State Crisis and Resilience Committee to help keep up to date with the latest cybersecurity issues and assessments.

“As organised crime and others become more sophisticated in hacking and disrupting digital services, it’s crucial government steps up to better protect against these cybersecurity threats,” Victorian Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings said.

“Victoria’s first ever Cyber Security Strategy ensures we can stay ahead of the cybercriminals and develop the infrastructure, systems and processes needed to protect government services and information.”
