Burnie region to receive CCTV upgrades
The federal government is funding CCTV camera upgrades for the Burnie region.
This support will be provided under the Safer Communities Fund, with $134,000 in funding offered to the Waratah Wynyard Council to install cameras in the Wynyard and Somerset region; and $60,000 in funding to the Burnie City Council.
The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton announced the funding in the electorate of Braddon in Tasmania to support local councils and community organisations in addressing crime and antisocial behaviour.
“This funding will enable the Waratah Wynyard Council to install approximately 16 CCTV cameras across the Wynyard and Somerset central business districts including at key strategic locations such as Gutteridge Gardens or Anzac Park,” Dutton said.
“This will also allow the Burnie City Council to install up to 10 CCTV cameras along Cattley and Wilmot Streets, Marine Terrace and the Wilson Street entrance to the central business district.”
The Liberal Party candidate for Braddon, Brett Whiteley, welcomed the announcement.
“Keeping our local community safe is really important. I’m pleased I’ve been able to deliver a safer local community by working closely with my federal colleagues and local government,” Whiteley said.
Tasmania Police will be consulted as to the most appropriate locations for the cameras.
The Safer Communities Fund, a 2016 election commitment, initially received $40 million to support local communities address crime and antisocial behaviour and to protect organisations that may face risks from racial or religious intolerance.
The 2018–19 Budget included an additional $30 million in funding from assets confiscated by the Commonwealth as proceeds of crime, meaning the program will be fully funded by money that was once destined to line the pockets of serious criminals.
The Safer Communities Fund is generally provided to local councils and community organisations to deliver local security infrastructure, such as fixed and mobile closed-circuit television, lighting and crime prevention through environmental design.
A third round of the Safer Communities Fund is expected to open for applications in the coming weeks.
