More Policelink callers choose online option
Increasing numbers of Policelink callers in Queensland are now choosing to go online.
Over the last three years in particular, there has been a steady but substantial increase in the number of callers choosing the Queensland Police Service’s online option.
In 2015–16, just over 100,000 callers went online, but this number had jumped to nearly 170,000 callers by 2017–18.
When people call the Policelink number they hear a number of options they can take depending on the nature of their call.
Police Minister Mark Ryan said people should always call Triple Zero in the event of an emergency.
“The Policelink number is for matters that are non-emergencies,” he said.
“But what we are witnessing with people who do call the Policelink number for less serious matters is that, just as in so many aspects of life these days, people are going online.
“For example, in 2017–18 we saw just over 60,000 go online to register noise complaints.
“And there were nearly 20,000 online reports of fuel drive-offs from service stations. Going online is a win-win for the community and police — it’s a fast way to convey information to police and that in turn helps police to respond quickly.”
