Port Pirie's free public Wi-Fi a hit
Data usage has doubled since Port Pirie Regional Council launched its free public Wi-Fi 12 months ago.
The CBD of Port Pirie and Crystal Brook had Wi-Fi installed as part of the state government’s grant funding of $55,000 for council to provide this service.
After conducting a survey of businesses on Ellen Street it became apparent that even though the Wi-Fi access is still relatively new, there has been a positive response from the public.
Data usage also showed that there has been almost double the number of authorised users since the system was first introduced, indicating that the public and community are benefiting from logging into the Wi-Fi. Currently over 4000 users are authorised per month.
On behalf of the community, Port Pirie Regional Council has also been able to leverage the public Wi-Fi to increase CCTV in partnership with SAPOL. This contributes to improved public safety outcomes for Port Pirie.
Council has plans to improve the public Wi-Fi, including expanding the reach through more locations. The Wi-Fi is currently available in 13 physical locations/premises and is covered by 25 physical access points.
As well as the Come See Change Banners on Ellen Street displaying “Free Wi-Fi”, council will be providing shop owners in the CBD with stickers to display on their windows and putting up signs in parks with access, to promote the free service and make it easier for people to log on.
