UK's CDEI details data privacy initiatives

The UK’s Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) is pursuing a number of initiatives aimed at enhancing data privacy to help unlock the value of data held across the economy.

As part of the UK government’s National Data Strategy, the agency is exploring ways to maximise the value of data for the public good in a way that earns public trust.

The agency has been working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and the Information Commissioner’s Office to explore how privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) can be most effectively deployed in practice to enable safe data use while removing barriers to data sharing.

Work to date has included an open call asking for organisations developing or using PETs to share examples of where they have been piloted and used.

This data has been developed into a series of case studies, which have in turn helped highlight areas where PETs have the potential to bring the most benefits, and what the key barriers to adoption are.

Meanwhile, the CDEI has been exploring the role of data intermediaries in enabling trustworthy data sharing, and plans to look for opportunities to work on projects where there is a potential for the use of new governance arrangements to facilitate responsible data sharing arrangements.

Finally, the CDEI is working with the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy to identify the best practice features of trustworthy smart data schemes, to help the department design sector-wide smart data schemes for various industries.
