Uni of Adelaide adopts Lenovo HPC platform

The University of Adelaide is deploying technology from Lenovo Australia to help support its high-performance computing workloads.

The university has signed a long-term deal to adopt Lenovo’s System x NeXtScale platform, which is specifically designed for HPC, for a system based on Intel’s Haswell processor technology.

Initial testing suggests that the Lenovo-based HPC platform will be over seven times more powerful than its predecessor.

The platform will be capable of supporting the university’s over 1800 research staff and 2500 research students across more than 50 research centres.

It will allow researchers in particle physics, machine learning, fluid dynamics and bioinformatics to conduct efficient computational analysis and modelling.

University of Adelaide CIO Mark Gregory said Lenovo Australia was chosen based on its open architecture and ability to co-exist in a multivendor environment, as well as overall HPC expertise.

“We expect our new Lenovo-based HPC platform to ensure our researchers get the computation power they need and this will enhance research outcomes for the university,” he said.
