Logan City Council funding FTTP upgrade
Logan City Council in South East Queensland has approved a $2.4 million project to upgrade existing broadband connections at more than 350 properties to Fibre to the Premises over the next 12–18 months.
The City of Logan Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Program is being conducted with the support of a grant from the Queensland Government. Opticomm is delivering the upgraded infrastructure under the program, which will also lay the foundation for further infrastructure upgrades.
The program was established in 2021 to ensure residents can access next-generation telecommunications services required by the city’s rapidly growing population.
Economic Development Chair Councillor Jon Raven said the council has taken the lead in advocating for improved broadband connectivity for residents, even though telecommunications is not traditionally a local government responsibility.
“Reliable internet isn’t a convenience anymore, it’s a necessity — both for our residents’ quality of life and for our businesses to compete globally,” he said.
“Our Digital Infrastructure and Connectivity Program is built on an evidence-based business case, which has been endorsed by the Queensland Government.”
As part of the program, the council is also working with public and private industry players to progress a project involving establishing a multifunctional data centre in Logan, as part of plans to help create new jobs and economic opportunities.
