Major IT upgrades for Australian Navy

A major overhaul is being conducted on the Navy’s IT equipment, with computer network updates worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

According to Minister for Defence Christopher Pyne, the fleet information environment (FIE) on the naval ships will be strengthened through these upgrades.

“The FIE consists of both classified and unclassified computer networks which are used throughout the fleet,” Pyne said.

These networks can exchange information within the ship or externally using radio and satellite connections.

“It’s fundamental to Navy’s ability to operate the fleet day to day, including participating in operations with allied nations.”

The project is worth around $600 million and will create more than 100 jobs designing and developing the new computer systems.

This is the first step towards rolling out contemporary computer systems to the fleet over the next decade ensuring the Navy continues to meet the challenges of modern warfare.

The current FIE has supported Navy’s deployed computer network requirements for over a decade.

Minister for Defence Industry Linda Reynolds said with technology moving rapidly, many components require upgrading and Australian industry will be approached to provide innovative solutions.

“The Commonwealth is continuing to work with Australian industry to improve defence capabilities and create local jobs,” she said.

“It’s an exciting project which provides numerous opportunities for Australian small and medium-sized businesses.”
