Five cities shortlisted for top Smart Cities Award

Five Australian cities — Brisbane, Adelaide, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and the Canterbury-Bankstown area of Greater Sydney — have been shortlisted for the top prize of the first Australian Smart Cities Awards.

The awards are being conducted by the Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand (SCCANZ) as part of Smart Cities Week, which will be held 29–31 October. The awards ceremony will be held in partnership with Telstra and Deloitte.

The five cities have been shortlisted for the grand Leadership City award, which will be the most hotly contested prize of the competition.

Brisbane City Council has been nominated for its initiatives such as its free public Wi-Fi network, its $5 million start-up and innovation hub and large-scale Bluetooth city monitoring system. Adelaide was mainly chosen for its Ten Gigabit Adelaide high-speed broadband project.

The City of Ipswich has meanwhile been recognised for its IoT and smart infrastructure initiatives, Sunshine Coast was chosen for its Smart Region Management Platform and Canterbury-Bankstown was selected for its free Our Energy Future energy advice service for renters and investors.

As well as the grand prize, awards will be presented in nine other categories, including digital city services, smart city strategy, research and innovation, social impact, and regional leadership.

Smart Cities Awards jury chair David Singleton AM said the awards will “articulate how smart cities activities can enhance the livability, workability and sustainability of our cities. For the first time, Australians will gain a clear idea of what leadership in smart cities looks like.”

In addition to Smart Cities Week, make sure you don’t miss Public Sector Network’s second annual Smart Cities Series, a range of conferences held in partnership with KPMG and supported by the Australian Smart Communities Association (ASCA) and SCCANZ.

The Smart Cities Series will bring together federal, state and local government, innovators, thinkers, financiers, educational and research institutions, and technology providers to network and discuss how they can achieve their goals.

The Smart Cities Series will be held across seven cities in Australia and New Zealand in October, before culminating at Smart Cities Week in Sydney. Full details are available on the Public Sector Network website.
