DTA taps Vault Systems to host Govpass

The Digital Transformation Agency has selected ASD-certified cloud services provider Vault Systems to host the government’s new Govpass digital identity platform.

Vault Systems is one of just three cloud providers with protected-level ASD certification, allowing it to store classified government information on its cloud platform.

The DTA is developing the Govpass platform internally after failing to find a suitable off-the-shelf offering. The platform will allow government services to connect to a user’s identity verifier over an identity exchange gateway. For security, the government service will be unable to view the user’s identity documents and the identity provider will be unable to see which service a user is accessing.

“Privacy and protection of personal information is at the heart of the DTA’s work on digital identity. Building trust in how the government stores personal data is not something we compromise on,” DTA CEO Gavin Slater said.

“Vault’s open standards cloud has been the perfect solution for Govpass, providing a level of security and sovereignty that is a critical to making the process of proving who you are to government simple, safe and secure.”

The ATO has already started testing Govpass on its new online tax file number application service. Australia Post meanwhile plans to implement its Digital ID identification verification service on the platform.

To coincide with the announcement, Vault Systems announced it has sold a 23% stake in the company to financial services group Moelis Australia. Through the investment, Moelis will support Vault Systems’ plan to invest $350 million into new cloud infrastructure.
