Ipswich council to take part in Myriad 2018

Ipswich City Council has revealed plans to take part in the Advance Queensland Myriad Festival to promote Ipswich as an innovation hub focused on job creation and skills development.

Members of incubation hub Fire Station 101 will also participate in the innovation festival to showcase start-up success stories from the region.

“Ipswich is leading an innovation and digital technology agenda that puts the city at the forefront in enabling new ways of working and living. We have once again been recognised as a global leader in Smart City innovation, this month named among the world’s Top 7 Intelligent Communities for 2018 after previously being acknowledged in 2015 and 2017,” Ipswich Mayor Andrer Antoniolli said.

“Ipswich’s commitment to Myriad further enhances our reputation as a forward-thinking city and a leader of the Advancing Regional Innovation Program.”

Myriad Festival 2018 will be held at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley from 16–18 May.

The council also revealed that it has already achieved cost savings from its Connected City Lighting Program to deploy connected LED streetlights across the region.

The council currently owns around 2% or 455 of the city’s 24,500 street lights, with Energex owning the balance.

Accurate and instant meter readings are expected to allow the council to achieve cost reductions, superseding the current unmetered flat rate tariff costing the council up to $4 million per year.

“What we have here is the opportunity to take the humble streetlight and turn it into part of a connected network,” Ipswich City Council Economic Development and Digital City Committee Chairman Paul Tully said.

“Smart LED street lighting and its associated smart technology is of national importance and demonstrates council’s commitment to energy efficiency and future application of smart city technologies.”
