Smart city pioneer John G Jung visits Adelaide
Smart city pioneer John G Jung has visited Adelaide to share his insights around the concept of intelligent communities and the social and economic benefits they can bring.
Jung is co-founder of the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) and is an award-winning urban planner, designer, author and global expert on planning and development related issues.
Speaking at an event hosted by the City of Prospect, which has five times been accredited by the ICF as a Smart City, Jung said the intelligent communities philosophy that is being adopted by governments worldwide can deliver tangible economic benefits.
Intelligent communities focus on leveraging technologies including broadband and the IoT to improve people’s lives. This requires an investment and policy framework that seeks to tap into available community knowledge to put people first.
A key theme of Jung’s presentation was the need to take a regional approach to intelligent community development. He advocated for an “Internet of Cities” mindset.
“Being declared an ICF Smart 21 City five times over is a huge achievement for a city of our size and budget; however, it is just the start as we aspire to win the higher ranked ‘Intelligent Community’ status in future ratings,” City of Prospect Mayor David O’Loughlin said.
“City of Prospect is ideally positioned to play a lead role in pushing the ICF message in not only South Australia but also nationally,” City CEO Cate Hart added.
“Leading by example and sharing our learnings, we hope to encourage other councils and regions to take advantage of the incredible opportunities to establish communities that are adapting to the challenges presented by future needs, demands and innovations.”
