Take-up of myGov doubles initial expectations

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has found that take-up the myGov online government services portal has nearly doubled initial expectations.

An audit of the project found that myGov now has more than 10 million active accounts and 10 member services online.

This compares to predictions made at the time of its launch in 2012 that there would be 5.1 million accounts and six member services accessible by this time.

The ANAO found that myGov has improved the delivery of government services by offering single sign-on for accessing services, allowing for easier updating of details and receiving correspondence through a secure digital portal.

Meanwhile, myGov has met or exceeded its monthly availability target of 99.5% due to the infrastructure put in place during 2015 to host the platform.

But the ANAO has recommended that a framework be established to monitor the site’s performance, to be overseen by the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA), and for the DTA and the Department of Human Services to help more agencies make their services available on the portal. Both recommendations have been accepted.

“myGov is now one of the largest digital services in the country, with an average of 242,000 people successfully using the capability daily. It’s making access to government services simpler and faster for Australians,” Minister for Human Services Alan Tudge said.

“We will continue to expand the services offered by myGov in partnership with the DTA, in conjunction with the broader digital transformation that is taking place across government.”

He said recent improvements have been made to myGov to accommodate an anticipated surge of usage associated with the end of the financial year, and that ongoing, regular updates will be made to the portal under a new iterative, user-driven approach to its development.
